In the world of Victoria's Secret, there's no higher honor than earning your wings. Some of the world's most well-known supermodels have held the Angel title, including Heidi Klum, Gisele Bündchen, Marisa Miller and Tyra Banks, and many models consider it to be the Holy Grail of contract jobs. Though, several of the brand's Angels have recently retired their wings, including Miranda Kerr, Erin Heatherton, Doutzen Kroes and Karlie Kloss, leaving room for a whole new class of girls to join VS's heavenly ranks.
On Tuesday, the brand announced its new group of contract models — the largest class of Angels in its history: Kate Grigorieva, Taylor Hill, Elsa Hosk, Martha Hunt, Jac Jagaciak, Stella Maxwell, Lais Ribeiro, Sara Sampaio, Romee Strijd and Jasmine Tookes.
We noticed a few noteworthy things about the group. Not only is the bunch as culturally diverse as it is beautiful, but it also includes four models who just made their debuts at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in December. They must have made quite the impression (or had timing on their side) because the other six have walked at least twice before being chosen.
The brand also played up each model's athletic abilities in a press release — Hosk was formerly a pro basketball player in Sweden and Sampaio is a brown belt in karate — helping to push forward the message that health and fitness are integral parts of the VS brand strategy and image. This is fitting, considering the emphasis that the retailer has put on its sport and swim lines as of late — and from the spike in profits it's seen from these categories.
Congratulations to all of the new Angels — you have some pretty huge wings to fill.
