I'd be curious to know just how many gowns were flown into Cannes for its annual film festival. With its many premieres and galas, the number must be greater those brought in for any other event series.
But it's the stars' daytime looks — typically worn to photocalls for the films they're promoting — that always prove the most varied, and thus interesting. They range from sleek little cocktail numbers (like Sienna Miller's Balenciaga frock, at bottom) to — and this is unusual for the red carpet — separates, as modeled so elegantly by Cate Blanchett. This year, one accessory was mysteriously absent during those photocalls: sunglasses. Did Cannes ban those along with flat shoes?
Regardless, scroll down to see our favorite daytime looks from Cannes.
We've become huge fans of the Hollywood Reporter over the last few months, mostly due to Janice Min's excellent makeover of the trade publication. Staffer Merle Ginsberg navigates the LA fashion scene with an entertaining mix of gossip, insider news, and general knowledge that is not only rare for the West Coast, but rare for fashion writing in general.
So we were thrilled to see Ginsberg's list of the 25 most powerful stylists in Hollywood covering this week's issue. Rachel Zoe obviously ranks number one, with names like Nicole Chavez, Annabel Tollman, Brad Goreski, Leslie Fremar, and Kate Young rounding it out. See the full list below, and read the Zoe cover story here.
Rooney Mara came out of hiding, looking smart and sexy in a frock from Calvin Klein's spring '13 collection. Also looking elegantly edgy was Cate Blanchett in Peter Pilotto. Meanwhile, Felicity Jones and Elle Fanning went for sweeter, softer looks at the British Independent Film Awards.
