The real takeaway from Nicolas Ghesquière's resort 2016 show for Louis Vuitton, according to social media at least, was the stunning backdrop: Bob Hope's John Lautner-designed estate perched atop a Palm Springs peak overlooking the desert. It made for beautiful photos, but did not take away from the even more intriguing clothes.
There was a softness to them that we haven't seen much from Ghesquière: Dresses, skirts and pants were long and loose, often paired with sneaker-like shoes or leather flip-flops (yes, flip-flops). There were even sweatshirts and what looked like a variation on sweatpants, with a drawstring waist. But don't worry, he hasn't gone entirely "athleisure." There was also a toughness to the collection, seen in criss-crossing belts reminiscent of armor, thick chain motifs, medieval-inspired details and lots of leather.
