You know what they say: when in Rome, do as the Romans do.
But since I'm not in Rome, I'll do what the people here in the U.S. are doing because everywhere I look — from the Hamptons to department stores — I see gladiator sandals of varying heights and designs. It's a trend I've resisted due to fear of blood loss in the ankles, but one brand keeps catching my attention: Ancient Greek Sandals. Its wares may not be ancient, but they are, in fact, made in Greece and capture the Greco-Roman vibe that has piqued my interest. They are subtly stylish in a delightful way.
My favorite style, the Alcyone, balances wide foot-binding straps with thin ankle-wrapping cords. Plus the rubber sole looks thick enough to withstand a long day walking around the city, where this modern gladiator's adversaries include unidentified falling liquids, frustrated taxi drivers and subway saunas.
As for those knee-high gladiator styles? I'm not brave enough for that yet. One battle at a time.
Alcyone Ancient Greek Sandals, $136, available at Forward by Elyse Walker.
