Yoga pants have benefitted hugely from a little R&D over the past few years. In lieu of the cheap, folded-waist lycra flares I used to wear to class, I now wear fitted, stylish leggings that magically wick away moisture, never smell, and that have (seemingly useful) mesh vents and (truly useful) hidden pockets.
But one thing I hadn't found until recently? Yoga pants with a good waistband — i.e., one I don't have to pull up every couple of poses or so. When Cheryl reviewed the first installment of Derek Lam's athleticwear collaboration with Athleta and mentioned that it included "the best waistband I've encountered in workout pants in awhile," I was intrigued, so I decided to give the brand's simple, high-waisted cropped version in black a try. Five classes and a four-mile run later, and these are my absolute favorite leggings. Beyond solving my biggest functional problem, I've discovered a high waist is much more flattering for my body type — and they have all the other things that I really value, including wicking fabric and a hidden pocket for my door key.
I've purchased another pair in navy and am wondering if I'll ever wear my other leggings again.
Athleta high rise "Chaturanga" capri, $64, available at Athleta.
