As a sort of New York Fashion Week detox, five friends and I spent all of last weekend in a sleepy, rural town two hours from Manhattan called Pine Bush. Here, I spent the majority of my time draped in Patagonia, eating locally grown apples and participating in various outdoor-related activities, including (but not limited to): hiking, canoeing, rock climbing and, perhaps most importantly, assembling s'mores over the campfire. And I realized: aside from a few fleeces and pullovers, I do not have nearly enough outdoorsy merchandise.
Enter Penfield's dreamy, weather-resistant army jacket, which was specially manufactured for Madewell and is the perfect coat for long strolls through the woods — or, in my case, equally long trips through Central Park. With an iconic buffalo-check lining and a drawstring waist, it looks slightly more feminine than your typical, run-of-the-mill military jacket — but that's what makes it special. Wear it with a floral, fall-friendly dress or jeans and a T-shirt, and you can't go wrong. Plus, you know it'll look extra-stellar on your next jaunt up to the Catskills.
Madewell & Penfield parka, $200, available at Madewell.
