Last winter, I became somewhat obsessed with a pair of Jil Sander platform oxfords in burgundy — real clunkers, with a round toe and snakeskin-print upper. I've set up multiple alerts on Ebay and elsewhere, but my size has yet to surface.
But it may be time to let that particular pair go. A couple of months ago, Stephanie (who has taken part in this zany fox chase from the beginning) sent me a link to the Opening Ceremony platform oxfords pictured above. I wasn't really interested — they looked narrow and awkward to me. But during Shopbop's friends and family sale, I decided to give them a try, and they did not have the anticipated Grinch-foot effect. In fact, they're pretty perfect. Proportionally, they work great with my perennial rotation of midi skirts, and can transform the tone of a plain black cashmere sweater and navy mid-calf skirt into something studied and slightly quirky. And because they're sensibly without a heel, I can wear them anywhere.
