A few years ago, I swore off jeans, concluding that 1) they didn't look good on me and 2) I'd never found a pair more comfortable than a skirt. But that hasn't completely stopped me from wanting to wear jeans — they look so good on everybody else! and they're not that expensive! — so over the last year I've tried on dozens upon dozens of pairs and acquired a grand total of two that I now wear very regularly.
The most recent of my jean discoveries is from J.Crew's denim-focused sister brand, Madewell. Since spring, I'd been on the hunt for a medium-blue pair that was cropped, flared, high-waisted, not too stretchy and frayed at the hems, which, despite harkening to many of the denim trends of the moment, was surprisingly hard to find. Madewell's high-waisted flares ticked all those boxes and, to boot, were the softest, most comfortable pair I tried on; for the first time in my jeans-wearing life, I find myself reaching for them — instead of a loose skirt — when I roll out of my apartment for brunch on a Sunday.
Madewell 11" high riser crop flares, $135, available at Madewell.
