Beauty tutorials are big on YouTube — a search for "makeup tutorial" and "hair tutorial" yields more than 5 million videos. In this series, we put a mix of popular and under-the-radar tutorials to the test and show you what’s best.
When a makeup-free Alexa Chung starts off her latest YouTube tutorial with the brilliant makeup artist Lisa Eldridge by saying, "I look horrible" (when she, in fact, looks kind of amazing), it's a bit of a slap in the face. But once you get past that and realize that even the most seemingly flawless women have their own issues, it's pretty informative, and filled with amusing quips from Chung. Plus, the end result is a pretty ideal holiday party look.
Like many of us, Chung's skin gets a bit pale, dry and red in the winter and Eldridge spends most of the tutorial correcting that with a base of foundation (which she intriguingly "thins out" with a buffer brush), under-eye concealer, blush and highlighter. By the end, Chung's skin is glowing.
Chung seems to have tired of her once-signature eyeliner flick. (If you're looking for a more classic '60s Chung look, head here.) Instead, Eldridge gives her an uncharacteristically glam smokey eye and bold rep lip, which Chung turns out to not be entirely comfortable with. Watch the video below to see what happens next.
