Upon first glance, I'd have guessed the dress pictured both above and below was made by a brand like Michael Kors or Ralph Lauren. Never would I have suspected it came from Self-Portrait, a contemporary label that's quickly been picking up steam thanks in no small part to its many celebrity admirers. Launched by Central Saint Martins alum Han Chong in late 2013, the brand is best known for its peekaboo lace — but clearly Chong is no one-trick pony.
Case in point: the brand's Militaire Crepe Maxi Dress, worn by both Gigi Hadid and Olivia Palermo this week just a day apart — Hadid for a taping of "Live With Kelly and Michael" on Tuesday morning (hot on the promotional trail for that night's Victoria's Secret Fashion Show) and Palermo at Wednesday night's opening of Audemars Piguet's Rodeo Drive store.
I may be a sucker for monochromatic lewks, especially those of the non-black or -white variety, but it's Hadid who came out on top for me. With its flashy leg slits, the dress was certainly a bold one to wear on a show that airs at 9 a.m. — but when promoting a TV special based solely in lingerie, what's more appropriate? It's not like Palermo didn't look awesome (she did), but those snakeskin heels and chunky jewels didn't have the ethereal effect of Hadid's more minimalist styling.
Interested parties can still purchase this dress online from Selfridges in UK sizes 6, 10, 12 and 14 — for now.
