Topshop to Host 8 Emerging Designers at London Fashion Week
The British Fashion Council announced its biannual selection of Newgen recipients on Wednesday. The emerging designers — Ashley Williams, Claire Barrow, Danielle Romeril, Faustine Steinmetz, Marta Jakubowski, Molly Goddard, Ryan Lo and Sadie Williams — will showcase their fall 2016 collections, sponsored by Topshop, during London Fashion Week in February. If you think this list sounds familiar, you're right. The eight designers will have received sponsorships for the past three or four seasons. Ashley Williams and Lo will return to London Fashion Week with runway shows while the rest of the designers will host stand-alone presentations.
Separately, the committee did recognize one new face: Roberta Einer, a "One-to-Watch" designer and Westminster graduate, who will present her fall 2016 collection with a special installation within the Designer Showroom's Newgen pop-up space. With Steinmetz and Jakubowski as former designers selected for this title, Einer is likely in the pipeline for a Newgen title in the coming seasons.
Since 1993, the Newgen initiative has given support to up-and-coming designers within the British fashion scene. Past recipients include Alexander McQueen, Christopher Kane, Erdem Moralıoğlu, Jonathan Saunders, Marta Marques and Paulo Almeida of Marques'Almeida (an LVMH Prize winner), and Jonathan Anderson, who won both menswear and womenswear designer of the year at the British Fashion Awards last month.
