The "Hedi Slimane is leaving Saint Laurent" rumors are back in action. On Tuesday night, WWD reported that Slimane has yet to renew his contract with Kering, and that Anthony Vaccarello — currently the creative director at Versus — is in "extensive talks" about taking over the top role at the French fashion house.
Vaccarello made waves in Paris as an emerging designer before he was handpicked by Donatella Versace to join Versus — the Italian brand's cooler, younger and digital-focused label — in 2013 to guest design a capsule collection. By 2015, Vaccarello was appointed to a more permanent role as Versus's creative director, and since then, revenue has more than doubled from 2014. Similar to Versus's success, Saint Laurent has also received a steady surge in sales since Slimane took over in 2012.
Saint Laurent just announced that it will stage a major runway show at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles on Feb. 10, the day before New York Fashion Week and five days before the Grammys. In addition to showcasing the men's fall collection, Slimane will also present "part 1" of the women's fall collection, which will follow up with a second edition on Mar. 7 during Paris Fashion Week. The event will also pay tribute to the music scene in Los Angeles, the city where Slimane is based and that's served as a huge inspiration for his work. Could this be the designer's swan song?
A representative at Saint Laurent has responded to the WWD report saying that it "was again based on speculation and we do not comment on rumors." We also reached out to representatives for Versus and have not heard a response at press time.
