Following a burst of (swiftly denied) rumors that Hedi Slimane might depart Saint Laurent in early January, the French house has announced some exciting plans for fashion month. On Feb. 10, just one day before New York Fashion Week begins, Saint Laurent will present the men's fall collection and "part 1" of the women's fall collection at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles. The second part of the women's collection will be shown as planned during Paris Fashion Week on Mar. 7.
The announcement came via a series of characteristically all-capped tweets in which the brand explained that the runway show — set to walk five days before the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles — will serve as a tribute to the city's music scene. Slimane has lived in L.A. since 2008 (with his studio based there since 2012) and California has served as a huge point of inspiration for his collections. The brand likened Slimane's studio away from Paris to Yves Saint Laurent's home in Marrakech, where the designer often escaped for periods of intense creativity.
This event recalls Tom Ford's fall 2015 show in L.A. — presented during London Fashion Week and days before the Oscars — where A-list actresses seemed to outnumber editors in the audience and which garnered the kind of social media buzz that has become increasingly important for designers trying to stand out during the busy fashion month calendar. Plus, having the dresses in town just before a major music-centric awards show doesn't hurt.
We have a feeling Saint Laurent will pull together a strong front row of on-brand musicians — Courtney Love, Sky Ferreira, Kim Gordon, Harry Styles? — and maybe even some performances that ensure this show is one of the highlights of the season.
