When it comes to footwear (and most apparel and accessory categories, actually), I tend towards the low-key and classic, which honestly means I have a lot of shoes that look alike. Basically, all I own are black ankle boots, black loafers and black ankle-strap heels. What I don't yet own are a pair of Mary Janes.

Popularized in the '50s and '60s, Mary Janes had a resurgence in the '90s; and while they've shown up on a few recent runways, they haven't had a full-blown comeback yet. Luckily, purveyors of subtly retro-inspired wardrobe staples A.P.C. have just the pair I'm looking for — they're a little less chunky than the old-school versions, but no less sweet. (Frances Valentine has a few styles in this vein, as well.) The same pair caught my eye at the brand's fall 2016 presentation during New York Fashion Week, styled there over thick black socks with a dress. I'll most likely wear them with tights and dresses while it's still chilly out, then contemplate wearing them with socks and ultimately conclude that it looks silly. We'll see.
