It's right around this stretch of winter that I start to lose my mind. At first, it's charming and romantic to bundle up under layers of cashmere and (ethically sourced) shearling before leaving the house. Beanies are fun, and so are oversized knit scarves, both of which are conveniently perfect for those days your office is roughly the same temperature as Winterfell. But after a while, the thought of another sudden snowfall — or worse, what Al Roker calls "freezing rain" — makes me want to buy an $800 bikini and spend all my money on a flight to Nevis.
I'm trying to be a "responsible adult" here, so that extravagant, last-minute vacation isn't in the books. I can do things like buy a light therapy lamp and set my computer background to an image from Valentino's beachy spring 2015 campaign. Another pro-tip I've learned over the years is to paint my nails in the brightest-possible shade of white, a color I often reserve for the dead of summer. I've blown through no less than four bottles of Essie's "Blanc" over the past few years for this very reason, and I can assure you it's the best, most opaque white polish on the market. (If you have any other suggestions, please send them my way!)
Essie nail polish in "Blanc," $8.59, available at Target.
