Kris Jenner's Vintage Fashion Collection Won't Be Going to Kim Kardashian

We caught up with the Kardashian-Jenner matriarch in Paris to discuss her '80s designer wardrobe, palling around with Karl Lagerfeld and Kendall Jenner's modeling industry bullies.

As a longtime editor of Fashionista, it still feels great when I tell someone where I work and they respond with something like, "I LOVE Fashionista!" But those words felt a thousand times greater when Kris freaking Jenner said them to me at an event in her honor in Paris Monday night.

Few people have made as indelible a mark on Fashion Month as the Kardashian-Jenner-West family collectively has over the past few seasons. From Kanye West's Madison Square Garden show for Yeezy Season 3 and industry-targeted Tweets to Kendall Jenner's frequent runway appearances and Kim Kardashian's selective front-row moments, much of the media's coverage of Fashion Month is centered around this savvy clan. And sitting (somewhat) quietly behind the scenes, orchestrating it all, is noted momager and marketing genius Kris Jenner.

It was for her marketing prowess that Jenner was honored by Editorialist, the three-year-old, accessories-focused online and offline magazine (with a commerce component), for which her daughter Kim Kardashian is the current cover star. Wearing a floor-length, body-con, white Louis Vuitton gown, Jenner held court at the Peninsula Paris for a party to celebrate the publication's "Women in Power" issue (in which she's featured) — a concept for which she's a perfect ambassador. "It was all about their approach and how great their editors are," Jenner told us, referring to founders Kate Davidson Hudson and Stefania Allen, about why she agreed to be featured. "I just feel really safe."

The family does appear to be pretty selective about who they let into their inner circle. Many of those people were in attendance Monday: Kendall Jenner, in town for her modeling duties, came by with Joan Smalls and Doutzen Kroes in tow. Balmain's Olivier Rousteing, hair guru Jen Atkin and family stylist Monica Rose were also there. Another close friend who was not in attendance, but who Jenner would be seeing the following morning at the Chanel show: Karl Lagerfeld. So what is their friendship like? "He's an amazing person," she confided (duh). "I find it so fascinating when I talk to Karl because he talks to everybody about the stuff that interests him." She added that she, Kendall and Lagerfeld would be taking a day trip to Rome together once Paris Fashion Week wraps up to open a new Fendi Hotel there. Before that, we'll be seeing her at Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Miu Miu.

Despite her family's domination of Fashion Month, Jenner claims that stress-wise, it's nothing compared to their annual Christmas card. "I think the craziest fashion time for us is probably the Christmas card every year. Monica Rose is the stylist for our card. She's the family stylist. Jen Atkin is over there, she's our hairstylist. We always travel with such an amazing team." She also denied that any complications arise from sharing a stylist for the whole family (even though we recall one instance of Kim scolding Kris for having all the same shoes as her on "Keeping Up With the Kardashians"): "It's so great because there's never a conflict."

Speaking of her personal wardrobe, Jenner's interest in fashion began long before her daughters started getting Vogue covers and Fendi campaigns, and she has quite the vintage collection: "I've had such great inspiration my whole life, especially from my mom, but in the '80s I was a huge collector of Moschino and Chanel and Valentino and I have stuff that's older than you are now!" Now that '80s fashion is having such a clear comeback, we had to ask which member of the family's younger generation would be getting her hands on those gems, and the answer was not what we expected.

"Most of it goes to Kourtney because she appreciates it the most and loves to wear it. I have an archive of it in my house."

In addition to being one of the most ubiquitous, famous and attractive families around, they're also among the most entrepreneurial — launching apps, games, clothing lines, beauty brands and more when they could easily get by without working much. And one gets the sense that Jenner is the powerful female force inspiring all that drive. "I think about the process of empowering women to believe in themselves and to not be bullied by anybody because that's a real problem today," she said, referencing some of the issues Kendall has faced in the modeling world. "I worry about my grandchildren and the whole issue of being bullied because it's so wrong on so many levels and there's such a high teenage suicide rate. I think [women should] take a step back and really keep themselves busy and follow their heart... [and believe that] if somebody says no, they're talking to the wrong person."

In addition to being an inspiring, powerful businesswoman, Jenner, from what we could tell, is a genuinely kind, friendly human. When we later told Editorialist's Allen how Jenner's sweet Fashionista comment had made our week, Allen responded: "I think she really likes to make people happy."
