When Hedi Slimane presented his latest collection for Saint Laurent at the house's newly renovated Paris atelier on March 7, we were initially left wondering who would actually wear such sparkly, cinched, aggressively '80s minidresses. But then dedicated fan Lady Gaga showed up to her 30th birthday party in Los Angeles over the weekend in one of the almost-couture collection's most recognizable looks, and it was immediately clear that this disco ball turned disco frock was made for her. And she was made for it.
With its exaggerated shoulders, absurd hemline and paparazzi-reflecting sheen, the dress symbolizes the end of an era for Gaga (who technically turns 30 today, Monday). Yes, she started her career courting and commenting on fame with absurd looks and music videos, but in the past few years she's focused on acting and advocacy, and let her strong voice shine through collaborations with Tony Bennett. With the help of stylist/designer Brandon Maxwell, she's embraced an elegant, slightly more understated personal style. So while this Saint Laurent number is certainly nightclub-appropriate, its conventional silhouette feels representative of that more mature Gaga. She could pull this off at her 60th birthday party, too, you know?
