On Friday morning, LVMH announced the eight finalists for its third annual LVMH Prize for Young Fashion Designers. Narrowed down from a short list of 23, each finalist was selected by a panel of 41 top international fashion experts after a LVMH Prize cocktail event at Paris Fashion Week, during which semifinalists presented their designs to industry veterans like Karl Lagerfeld and Riccardo Tisci.
In a press release, Louis Vuitton's Executive Vice President Delphine Arnault stated: "With 3 designers based in Paris in the final 8, the list reflects the vitality of the French fashion scene and the attractiveness of Paris for designers from all over the world." This group includes Paris-based Christelle Kocher of Koché, a semifinalist for the second year in a row. Designer and stylist Brandon Maxwell, who (very humbly) told us that he felt like he had already won at the cocktail event, also made the cut, as well as fellow New York-based designer Matthew Williams of Alyx. And for the first time in its three-year history, a Japanese designer (Hiromichi Ochiai) was selected as one of the eight finalists.
The winner will be announced on June 16 at the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris and will be awarded with a prize of 300,000 euros, as well as a year of mentorship from LVMH. Read on for the full list of finalists.
