There are big changes on the horizon for Maje and Sandro, those purveyors of $500 French cool. The brands' Paris-based parent company, SMCP, has submitted the necessary documents to make moves toward an initial public offering. SMCP, which also operates the womenswear brand Claudie Pierlot, has been owned by the private equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. since 2013.

According to SMCP, its total sales grew by 33 percent in 2015 to €675 million. In the same year, it opened 139 locations in cities ranging from Dubai to Hong Kong; at this point, more than 50 percent of the company's sales are coming from outside France.

We'll be watching to see what happens with this. Vive la France — and for the sake of SMCP's future growth, long live our fascination with France's style.
