This Week's Best-Dressed Didn't Shy Away from Experimentation

Plus, orange eyeshadow was a popular pick.

Every week, there are celebrities who look inarguably good, but inexplicably boring. This week's best-dressed, however, didn't fall into that category.

With the help of stylist Micaela Erlanger, actress Lupita Nyong'o made a bold statement in a custom J.Crew ensemble (accessorized with Stuart Weitzman heels) at Monday's premiere of "The Jungle Book" at the El Capitan Theatre. It was a polarizing look for sure, what with the color of the shirt and the short-sleeved, deep V-neck silhouette favored by teens back in the early 2000s, but it was a look that this author eventually warmed up to. And on Wednesday evening, multi-hyphenate model Liya Kebede attended the opening night of the 7th Annual Women in the World Summit at Lincoln Center in an oversized, asymmetrical Proenza Schouler outfit that we at Fashionista loved. Sudanese-born British supermodel Alek Wek attended the same event in an easy floral dress, which she accessorized with a wide belt.

And on Thursday night, Diane von Furstenberg and Tina Brown hosted the 7th Annual DVF Awards at the United Nations. Allison Williams, one of the event's presenters, was dressed in a floor-length, low-cut gown by the designer. (The two shared an adorable kiss — evidence of which you can see below.)

Across the pond, Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge (aka Kate Middleton) — whose penchant for proper dresses have been very well-documented over the years — made headlines for turning up to a reception at the Kensington Palace in a floor-length, Saloni polka-dot dress with (wait for it) sheer panels. There was not a single "Downton Abbey" hat in sight, and for once, the Duchess ditched her recycling outfit ways. (Ok, once is a bit of an exaggeration.)

Aside from clothes, though, celebrities took beauty risks on the red carpet as well; both Nyong'o and Georgia May Jagger favored bright orange eyeshadow, the former in metallic. To create Nyong'o's high-shine lids, makeup artist Nick Barose used swipes of Lancome's Color Design Sensational Effects Eyeshadow in Pose mixed with Mehron's Mixing Liquid. For those interested in something a bit more "subtle" (à la Jagger), however, we recommend MAC's Eye Shadow in Rule.
