Prabal Gurung, J.Crew and DKNY Among Brands Hosting Paid Interns Through Mayor's Program
Back in March, the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) launched NYC Fashion Forward, an initiative that will offer up to 100 paid fashion internships to high school and college students this summer. At the time of the announcement, the Mayor's Fund was still gathering industry employers throughout the city. First Lady Chirlane McCray happily announced on Tuesday that 38 fashion companies have officially signed on to offer paid internships.
For six weeks in July, a total of 500 paid interns will work for 126 businesses citywide. It's not just fashion: companies in the fields of hospitality, business services, real estate and media and entertainment, including Hearst, have also signed on to the program.
The lucky students picked for fashion internships will be assigned roles from a stellar mix of department stores, specialty studios, PR firms and designers. Prabal Gurung, who attended Tuesday's announcement, is one example. "What's great about an internship [at Prabal Gurung] is that you can get an understanding for the business from so many angles," Gurung told Fashionista over email. "The departments are very connected and work closely together, which allows for an incredibly educational, 360-degree experience."
Unfortunately, the application window for these internships already closed at the end of April. (But that's okay! Our careers page is constantly updated with the latest job and internship opportunities.) Check out the full list of employers who are a part of this summer's NYC Fashion Forward program below.
