Welcome to our new column, "Hey, Quick Question," where we investigate seemingly random happenings in the fashion industry. Enjoy!
On Tuesday, Anna Wintour spoke at the Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity, and while media is abuzz about her comments on Donald Trump and the current clickbaity state of digital media (an entirely different "Hey, Quick Question" altogether), we have spent a good chunk of our day trying to sort out which designer/celebrity pairing Wintour just decimated.
Below, find an excerpt from Page Six's write up of Wintour's talk with the one in question:
With characteristic Wintour disdain, she continued, "Contrast that with a show that I saw last winter, studded to the hilt with flash, and iPhone-ready showmanship. I almost didn't get to see the clothes at all, because some B-level, actually she was C- or D-level celebrity, I honestly don't know even who it was, had dragged in a horde of paparazzi to photograph her holding various provocative signs right in front of the Vogue group.
“That show had nothing to do with creativity on the runway, nobody had given any thought as to why we were there, except to photograph the tired imagery of the brand, it was as if the lights and the people were there to distract us from the lack of creativity on the runway."
Where do we even start? The most obvious place is to wonder which C- or D-level celebrity just had his or her hopes of scoring a Vogue cover eviscerated. A lesser Kardashian might seem an obvious choice, but considering Wintour keeps up with Kim, Kanye and Kendall, it's unlikely she's referring to any of the Jenner-Kardashian krew. We're also having a hard time remembering a celebrity who was spotted FROW "holding various provocative signs," which seems like something we would remember, whether they were actual physical signs or paparazzi-friendly hand gestures.
But Wintour's drag doesn't end there; her assessment of the show itself is particularly damning, especially the bits about "tired imagery" and "lack of creativity on the runway." Damn, Anna. Savage. Wintour doesn't attend too many shows these days, so it shouldn't be too hard to sort out which show had her feeling sour. However, we've hit a wall.
