Chanel Bag Value Increased 70 Percent in Last 6 Years

According to a new study, the Chanel flap bag might be a more sound investment than real estate.

Upon its release in February 1955, Chanel's oldest and arguably most permanent style, the flap bag, retailed for $220. Two hundred and twenty dollars. However, by the '90s, the handbag (also known as the 2.55 Bag) had already swelled to a price tag of $1,150, which is still a steal considering that, today, it'll set you back $4,900. You read that correctly — in fact, the Medium Classic Flap has increased in value by over 70 percent in the last six years alone.

In a recent study conducted by Baghunter, experts analyzed the pricing history and investment potential of the 2.55; however, they note that the pattern is largely indicative of Chanel handbags as a whole. What they found was that between 2010-2015, the retail value of the 2.55 outpaced the rise of inflation in the United States by more than eightfold: "Housing prices increased by 8.1 percent and the S&P 500 by 13.2 percent during that same period, with neither coming close to matching the rapid value increase of the Chanel Medium Classic Flap bag," reads the study.
