Ever since Dior took piercings to a whole new level with its fall runway show, I've felt like my ears were incompetent. As fashion girls continue to pepper their lobes and helix with delicate studs and hoops, my undiagnosed but highly sensitive metal allergy has kept me from joining the ranks of the many J.Colby Smith devotees in New York City. So I've learned to get creative with my two lonely piercings. And these Smith + Mara suspender earrings will do the trick.
This new style from the jewelry designer duo, Sara Smith and Mara Rothbart, is already a hit among the celebrity and fashion blogger set. (So far it's been spotted on Miranda Kerr, Gigi Hadid and Cupcakes and Cashmere.) I reached out to the brand to learn more about the earring's backstory and Smith and Rothbart explained the design came from playing around with jewelry wire, in hopes of creating a fresh but simple style. After placing the wire up and over the ear and out the back — a reverse take on the classic "huggie" earring — they knew they were on to something. Originally the designers wanted to call it an "ear hook," but later decided on "suspender" because it can seamlessly suspend from the ear without falling down.
These suspender earrings come in your standard delicate details: yellow, white or rose gold, with the option to have them studded with diamonds, black diamonds, rubies, blue sapphires, turquoise or pearls. I have my eye on the plain yellow gold version because this girl is on a budget. (The earrings retail for between $150 and $460 each.) But in a perfect world, I'd seek Smith's expertise and pair them with one covered in pave diamonds, too. It would perfectly complement my Catbird ear cuff, which, fortunately, doesn't require a piercing.
