As one of the hottest tickets of New York Fashion Week, Monse's spring 2017 show attracted quite the spread of industry folk, from Iris Apfel to Brandon Maxwell. This season's show-goers also included a roster of celebrity stylists, seated in the front row so as to easily scope out designers Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia's latest collection for their A-list clientele. As soon as we spotted Micaela Erlanger — stylist to Lupita Nyong'o, Michelle Dockery and Winona Ryder — we knew a major Nyong'o-in-Monse moment was imminent. Now, with Nyong'o amidst a publicity push for her new film "Queen of Katwe," that time has arrived.
For an appearance on "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert" (her second since the show premiered last September), Nyong'o wore a patterned silk minidress from Monse's resort 2017 collection. Complete with Monse's now-signature waist belt and shirting-inspired bodice, the piece's fabric alternated between a diagonal stripe and two varieties of check. The way the skirt hung — asymmetrically, with its left side coming to a point, reminiscent of a scarf — as well as the folded-over detailing of the neckline gave the dress a unique sense of sophistication that we've come to expect from Kim and Garcia's designs, and that Nyong'o herself embodies quite well. What's better is that Nyong'o paired the dress with a perfectly matching head wrap, which her hair stylist Vernon François likes to call "a crown" on Instagram.
