Though Willow Smith's edgy editorial spread for the upcoming issue of CR Fashion Book was revealed at the end of August, its cover star had yet to be named. But perhaps editor Carine Roitfeld was waiting it out until the first day of New York Fashion Week to unveil that said star is indeed Rihanna, whom she styled as a modern-day (read: blunt-smoking) Marie Antoinette.
"The magazine is crafted around key elements of her [Marie Antoinette's] life — her exuberant sense of fashion, her elaborate hairdos, her intense sexuality — almost like a modern biography through fashion imagery," said Roitfeld for CR Fashion Book's website. "And on the cover is Rihanna, who shares with Marie Antoinette an air of royalty that I, and the world it seems, find intoxicating."
For Terry Richardson's lens, Rihanna channeled the famous royal in a custom corset by Dilara Findikoglu, a Central Saint Martins grad who's dressed stylishly daring singers like Grimes and FKA Twigs. In a second cover, Rihanna is dressed in Dior — naturally, as she's the face of the French fashion house. She's also holding one boob — also natural. Both looks feature a certain pink hue reminiscent of Rihanna's memorable opening performance from this year's MTV Video Music Awards.
CR Fashion Book's Issue 9 hits newsstands on Sept. 15.
