Never in recent memory have we seen the runways saturated with as many newcomers as we saw throughout fashion month. It meant that for up-and-coming models completing their first show circuit, the competition to stand out was extra intense this time around. In an industry where one minute you're the next big thing, and the next season you're done—we were pleasantly surprised to see so many rookies with serious potential for longevity. Here are our top 10 faces to watch from the Spring '17 freshman class of models.
Jessie Bloemendaal (Women)
Hometown: Leiden, Netherlands
Highlight reel: 47 shows; closed Alexander Wang and Rick Owens; opened and closed Alexander McQueen; walked Gucci, Prada and Versace
The rap: There are new models, and then there are new models who seem like they've been doing it forever. Jessie B. is one of the latter. Discovered on Instagram, the stunning blonde 20-year-old was on every casting director's hit list this season. She sure knows how to give the blue steel.
Faretta (The Society)
Highlight reel: 35 shows; opened Victoria Beckham, Mugler and Roberto Cavalli; walked Celine, Valentino, Givenchy, Mugler, Saint Laurent and Chanel
The rap: Seriously, look at this girl’s face. She couldn’t be anything but a model. And she only needs one name, which is always a selling point. With appearances on every runway that matters and in Paris Vogue already under her belt, this Croatian knockout has major staying power.
Jess Pw (The Society)
Hometown: Perth, Australia
Highlight reel: 52 shows; opened Marni
The rap: Rookie of the season! This strong-looking Australian (those cheekbones!) made an incredibly strong spring '17 debut. Not only did she walk more shows than any other newbie; she also walked the most shows out of all models, period. Not seen here: her incredibly cool street style and nerdy-chic, wire-frame glasses.
Ellen Rosa (DNA)
Hometown: Macae, Brazil
Highlight reel: 29 shows; opened Altuzarra and Sies Marjan; walked Prada, Fendi, Celine, Dior and Chanel
The rap: It's been over a decade since Gisele and co. led the Brazilian model revolution. Enter Rosa: she isn't your typical bombshell and has unique, exotic look that made her a fit for everyone from Michael Kors to Miuccia Prada to Alexander McQueen (and Wang).
Cara Taylor (Silent)
Hometown: Huntsville, Alabama
Highlight reel: 12 shows; closed Dior; walked Alexander Wang, Loewe, Jil Sander and Dries Van Noten
The rap: There's a brat in every pack. This season's spunky star hails from Alabama, but she's no southern belle. Her tomboyish, androgynous charm and short hair won us over on the Milan runways. Equally adorable: she's a volleyball player back home in high school.
Luisana Gonzalez (Ford)
Hometown: Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
Highlight reel: 24 shows; walked Proenza Schouler, Coach, J.W. Anderson, Alexander McQueen, Marni and Dior
The rap: Meet the next big thing from the DR. Last season, Luisiana caught our eye on the last day of PFW as a Louis Vuitton exclusive (who could forget that hair?). The Caribbean cutie lived up to the hype with a top-tier-only show list. We can't get enough of her sweet smile and Solange-esque natural curls.
Luna Bijl (DNA)
Hometown: Rotterdam, Netherlands
Highlight reel: 33 shows total; opened Thakoon; walked Michael Kors, Moschino, Bottega Veneta, Balmain, Chanel, Isabel Marant and Lanvin
The rap: There is definitely something in the water in the Netherlands. The latest case in point: lovely Luna (those blue eyes! that doll face!), who came into the season with two Paris Vogue covers under her belt already. She fit in just about everywhere — from Bottega to Balmain — and built off her early momentum. She's also apparently really into motocross, and that's pretty badass.
Hometown: Murrieta, California
Highlight reel: 16 Shows; walked Alexander Wang, Versus, Versace, Chanel and Stella McCartney
The rap: Keep an eye on this one. With a catchy nickname like Impy, you can't really go wrong. The former brunette got an edgy blonde makeover for her exclusive at Alexander Wang, which turned into turns at Versace (NBD), Chanel and more. Judging by her playful social media presence, Impy has the personality and the grit to make it big.
HoYeon Jung (The Society)
Hometown: Myeonmok-dong, South Korea
Highlight reel: 7 shows; walked Marc Jacobs, Rag & Bone, Fendi and Louis Vuitton
The rap: With all due respect, America's Next Top Model isn't exactly known for producing successful runway models. But that isn't the case with this former ANTM South Korea winner, whose fiery red hair and cool personal style made her a shoo-in at Louis Vuitton and Marc Jacobs. We'd wager she rocked those sky-high platform boots better than just about anyone else.
Emm Arruda (Women)
Hometown: Ontario, Canada
Highlight reel: 11 shows; walked Proenza Schouler, Louis Vuitton, Valentino, Dior and Chanel
The rap: You've got some seriously cool cred when the only show you walk in New York is Proenza Schouler. Even cooler: Emm started modeling just months after a major spinal surgery. Her Instagram profile proudly proclaims she's a "scoliosis warrior." We love her curly hair and girl-next-door vibe. After keeping things selective this season (she skipped London and Milan), we're anticipating a lot more from this one in the months to come.
Mayowa Nicholas (The Society)
Hometown: Lagos, Nigeria
Highlight reel: 42 shows; walked Proenza Schouler, J.W. Anderson, Bottega Veneta, Versace, Balmain, Celine and Miu Miu
The rap: This former winner of the Elite Model Look in Nigeria made an impressive debut last season, but Spring ’17 was her true breakout moment. She hit just about every buzz worthy show this time around—from Proenza to Burberry to Prada and Celine—solidifying her status as a newcomer to watch.
Nora Attal (Viva London)
Hometown: London, United Kingdom
Highlight reel: 11 shows; closed J.W. Anderson; opened Acne Studios; walked Celine, Prada, Dior and Loewe
The rap: Before this Londoner ever set foot on a runway, she had already starred in a campaign for J.W. Anderson. Not too shabby. This season, the British-Moroccan beauty built on that momentum, walking a spate of premium-only shows in London (Burberry, Versus), Milan (a Prada exclusive) and Paris (Celine, Dior). We’re anticipating a big, bright editorial future from Attal.
Jourdana Phillips (Major)
Highlight reel: 1 show; closed Saint Laurent
The rap: Sometimes making an impact is more about quality than quantity. Phillips was a testament to this as a Saint Laurent exclusive. After making the rounds for several years now, a brand new bleached buzz cut and top-tier booking thrust her into the spotlight, leaving everyone wondering: Who’s that girl? We can’t wait to see more from her.
