Chanel Does Throwback '90s Beauty on the Runway for Spring

Think "Fresh Prince" vibes, but with more tweed.

What do you get when you combine a classic tweed Chanel suit, an amped-up color palette, a voluminous side ponytail, a bit of pink lip gloss and a playful sideways snapback hat? It's Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel's spring 2017 take on 1995. And it was — to borrow a word that has also made a resurgence since its heyday in the '90s — pretty rad.

Models all wore different colored hats to coordinate with their clothing (the hats were one of many accessories, which also included statement earrings, classic Chanel floral brooches and charm-adorned hair elastics). To build on that '90s theme even more, hairstylist Sam McKnight went for voluminous, low side ponytails. (Not every model wore this look, though most did.) The fullness and texture of the hairstyle — and the fact that there were zero '90s bangs and no crimping in sight — modernized the look slightly. "They're sporty, naughty and easy at the same time," McKnight told Allure in a backstage interview.

And then there were the hair elastics. (Don't worry, no scrunchies here.)

Models wore a variety of brightly colored ponytail holders, each with a unique variety of Chanel charms.

To complement the throwback hair and accessories, makeup artist Tom Pecheux busted out his Caboodle and LipSmackers. Kidding. He did, however, create a youthful look that included shiny pink lips and similarly-toned blush.
