CoverGirl announced its first-ever male face (CoverGuy?) on Tuesday, 17-year-old makeup artist and social media phenom James Charles. Charles's hordes of followers on Instagram and YouTube are drawn to his imaginative work and bubbly personality, but it's his messages about embracing individuality and self-exploration through makeup that are especially inspiring. And now he's bringing that perspective to the classic makeup brand. We got the chance to ask Charles about his new role.
What does it mean to you to be CoverGirl's first-ever male face?
It's incredible. This has been the coolest experience of my life and I am so honored and thankful to be able to start this new era of CoverGirl.
What do you hope people will find most inspiring about your partnership with CoverGirl?
I really hope people who maybe haven't been confident enough to try out makeup see me and realize literally anyone can do it and feel beautiful.
I'm sure you have plenty of brands clamoring to work with you; why did you choose to partner with CoverGirl specifically?
I really wanted to work with CoverGirl because the brand is iconic. Everyone knows it. It was such a cool and unique opportunity to be able to bring my flair as a young male makeup artist and influencer to such a well-renowned and historic company.
What's the most important thing you hope to accomplish through your partnership with CoverGirl?
I truly want to inspire others and help others feel confident in their skin, whether you have on no makeup or 18 pounds of it. That is my only goal.
