"The View" co-host and EGOT winner Whoopi Goldberg has always had a penchant for fashion: she documents her prolific shoe collection on Instagram, is a fan of Vetements and was a front-row staple at New York Fashion Week in September. (We spotted her at Marc Jacobs, Hood by Air and on the Opening Ceremony runway, to a name a few.) It was only a matter of time until she put her design chops to the test, which was unveiled on Wednesday.
Goldberg will release a limited-edition collection of eight "ugly" holiday sweaters in collaboration with Lord & Taylor. The knitwear pieces will be available on November 1 — right when holiday shopping kicks off — at 37 select Lord & Taylor locations and online.
The partnership seems perfect for Goldberg's quirky sense of style and humor. Plus, she's an avid Christmas sweater wearer, as proven during her hosting stints on "The View." Previously, she's been spotted in a blue crew neck adorned with pom-poms and a cat wearing a Santa hat, as well as a green sweater with snowflakes and a black Santa (a find from Amazon, said Goldberg on Twitter).
"The quality of the Christmas sweaters has gone down for me. They're not as comfortable and they don’t feel as good," said Goldberg in an interview with WWD. "If we're going to do it, we wanted to do them really well. They're cashmere blends and they’re really soft." That type of high quality comes with a high price: expect to cough up $139 for one of Goldberg's novelty designs made from alpaca, wool and cashmere.
And what type of anticipated holiday collection isn't complete without a celebratory window display? On November 15, the Lord & Taylor flagship in New York City will unveil a special installation dedicated to the collaboration as part of its annual holiday windows, so shoppers and tourists can check it out through Thanksgiving and the rest of the cheery season.
