By now, Burberry's annual holiday campaign has become a highlight of the season. Whether it was superstars like Elton John and Naomi Campbell jumping around in 2015 to celebrate "Billy Elliot," or Romeo Beckham's starring turn in 2014, the brand doesn't shy away from bright, mega-watt productions for the season.
Like many things this year, Burberry is going in a completely new direction for the 2016 holiday campaign, which celebrates the brand's 160th anniversary. Dubbed "The Tale of Thomas Burberry," the video has the scope and scale of a blockbuster movie trailer. That's because the brand tapped Asif Kapadia, the Oscar-winning director of Amy, to helm the campaign, and Matt Charman, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of Bridge of Spies, to write the script.
Of course, this is Burberry, so the cast is also packed with incredible British talent. Domhnall Gleeson, who just had a breakthrough role in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," plays Thomas Burberry himself. Both Sienna Miller and Burberry campaign face Lily James play his love interests; Miller as his fictional first love, James as pilot Betty Dawson, a fictionalized version of world-record breaking pilot Betty Kirby-Green. Dominic West rounds out the cast as Sir Ernest Shackleton, the pioneering polar explorer who wore Burberry gabardine for three Antarctic expeditions.
There's just one disappointing thing about the holiday campaign: that there isn't a real "The Tale of Thomas Burberry" movie coming to theaters this Christmas. We would definitely watch.
