Dark lipstick can be tricky: Find a good one, and it transforms you into a vampy, daring ingenue (or, if you're really lucky, Jane Lane from "Daria"). But go a smidge too cool or too shiny, and you could wind up looking like a straight-up vampire.
My latest discovery in my ongoing quest to find the perfect dark lipstick? Giorgio Armani's Lip Magnet in Night Viper, a new launch for the brand. (Disclosure: It was sent to me for free, #beautyeditorperks.) This lip product is difficult to describe, because it has a liquid-y feel that's much lighter than a gloss or even a balm, yet it has insane color payoff and is super-opaque in just one swipe. The finish is satiny, so it's neither too glossy nor too chalky or matte. You don't need any liner or primer with it, either: the angled, pointy doe-foot applicator allows you to be precise with your application, which you'll definitely want to be, since this stuff stays put.
Yesterday, I decided to test out just how long it lasts (the brand claims it has eight hours of staying power). I applied two layers carefully at about 9 a.m., then went about my day chugging water, drinking tea and even digging into a veggie burger. And though I did notice lip prints on my water bottle, the color was still pretty much fully intact on my lips at 9 p.m., when I finally reached for the makeup remover. What's more, my lips didn't feel like withered raisins once I did finally remove it. Considering how drying most long-lasting lip stains are, and the changing seasons, that's an incredible feat.
Oh, and the shade is excellent — it's a very deep, purple-tinged berry — and I find it really brings out my inner Jane Lane.
