The annual Pirelli calendar — also known as "The Cal," now in its forty-fourth edition — experienced a top-to-bottom rebrand for 2016. Gone were the pin-up-style supermodels that had previously comprised its lineups, instead enlisting a new class of women of all ages and occupations. (Writer Fran Lebowitz, musician and performer Yoko Ono, comedian Amy Schumer and actress and writer Tavi Gevinson were among last year's trailblazers, all of whom were photographed by Annie Leibovitz.)
Back in August, Pirelli revealed its new cast for the 2017 edition, which is centered around some of the most celebrated actresses of our time: Charlotte Rampling, Uma Thurman, Nicole Kidman, Lea Seydoux, Alicia Vikander, Kate Winslet, Julianne Moore, Robin Wright, Lupita Nyong'o, Rooney Mara, Jessica Chastain, Penelope Cruz Helen Mirren, Zhang Ziyi and "special guest" Anastacia Ignatova. And on Tuesday, it released the first images from the calendar, all lensed by Peter Lindbergh, who has shot the calendar twice before.
In the first four shots, we see Thurman, Kidman, Moore and Wright — with eight Oscar nominations (and two wins) between them — posing in simple clothing like black leotards and, on Thurman, a cozy turtleneck sweater. While its cast may feature a different population from last year's, its aesthetic — stripped down, in elegant black and white and not overtly sexual — remains the same.
Lindbergh said in a release that he chose the title "Emotional" for the project, the goal of which was "to create a calendar not around perfect bodies, but on sensitivity and emotion, stripping down to the very soul of the sitters, who thus become more nude than naked." He shot the cast over a period of four weeks in May and June of this year in five locations: New York, Berlin, London, Los Angeles and Le Touquet (North of France).
