The 'Gateway Corset' Alyssa's Using to Try Out the Trend

I don't often attempt to replicate runway styling, but I'm making an exception this season.

I'm not a huge follower of runway trends — I tend to invest in a handful of well-made, seasonless pieces every year, often ones that I've been obsessing over (and saving up for) for quite some time. As we head into winter, I'm stocked up in the sweater department, but I've been looking for an item or two that will add a little oomph to my slightly boring cold weather wardrobe. (For fall, I pulled the trigger on an oversized Gucci belt that really did the trick.)

Enter the corset: The piece first popped up on my radar when I was in Milan last February, where Miuccia Prada accented her models' waists with white lace-up versions overtop of coats, dresses and blouses, lending a sexy, sculptural touch to even the most utilitarian looks. Then I started noticing the accessory almost everywhere, from the runways at Balmain, Loewe, Alexander McQueen and Louis Vuitton, to street style shots of the famously curvaceous Kim Kardashian, who threw hers on over roomy streetwear and "Saint Pablo" tour merch.

It was after dropping by the Tibi showroom to browse its spring collection when I finally tried one on for myself — a stretchy version similar to the option above — and it's been on my mind ever since. The piece is surprisingly versatile, but I particularly like it paired with a simple white button-down, an oversized sweater or a shirt dress. Aside from highlighting your shape, it adds femininity to even the simplest, most tomboyish looks. Plus, it can probably make any boring outfit look interesting! I plan on taking one for a spin during the holiday party circuit to help strike up conversations. I'll let you know how that goes.
