When Bobbi Brown's new "Remedies" — a collection of five different treatments targeting separate issues packaged in little vials with medicine dropper dispensers — first hit my desk, I was a little confused... and apprehensive. Bobbi Brown is a makeup company, albeit one founded on less-is-more principals, and I've never really trusted skin-care products made by those who don't, you know, specialize in the making of skin-care products. And then I tried these. And I liked them.

My favorite of the five different tonics, at least for Dry Skin Season, is the "fortifier." The pale-green oil is thick, so a few drops go a long way, and damn, is it hydrating. A cocktail of lipid-rich ingredients (muru muru butter, olive oil, meadowfoam seed oil) helps to fortify skin's moisture barrier (that's where its name comes from). I prefer using it as the last step in my lengthy nighttime beauty routine: I'll let all of my other products (toner, retinol, moisturizer) soak in sufficiently, and then pat a couple of drops of the thick oil over any especially dry problem areas. In addition to providing an added layer of moisture, it also helps seal everything else in and prevents them all from evaporating off my skin as I sleep.
