I've never had particularly sensitive skin, but winter in NYC can be a doozy. This year's magical combination of especially frigid coastal air and moisture-deprived indoor environments heated by old radiators has brought out a level of dryness I've never really had to grapple with before. (Or maybe I'm just getting old and my skin is in revolt? Who knows.) One of the main causes of flaky limbs, according to dermatologists, is showering. Yep: Spending time in hot water might feel good, but it can actually mess with skin's ability to hold onto moisture, as can sudsing up with a traditional body wash.
Enter this super-hydrating, oil-based cleanser from L'Occitane. A beauty editor friend first recommended it, and since I'm obsessed with anything and everything almond-scented I was immediately on board. But it exceeded my expectations — by a lot. Although it's an oil, it's a super-thick one, meaning it doesn't just spill everywhere or seep through your fingers creating a greasy mess on the floor of your shower. The consistency is almost like honey (but don't worry, it's not sticky). Once you start massaging it into skin, it melts into a milky, slightly foamy texture that gets skin clean without stripping away natural moisture.
Oh, and it smells amazing. Almond-y, yes, but not in an obnoxiously saccharine way. Just like you walked past a bakery and got a quick whiff of a fresh batch of almond cookies mixed with crisp outside air. In case you couldn't tell, I'm now a huge fan and plan to use it all winter long. So far, I've found that the combination of this oil followed by an ultra-thick body cream immediately after I get out of the shower (lately I've been using The Body Shop's Shea Body Butter) has gotten me back into normal, non-finicky skin territory.
