Pat McGrath is a visionary and an artist. And while she can swipe on a cat eye or paint a flawless red (glitter!) lip with ease, it's arguably during the more avant-garde couture shows when her true creativity is unleashed. Take, for example, the slew of individual makeup looks she created for Maison Margiela's spring 2017 couture runway.
Creating a variety of different makeup looks is something McGrath has done before at Margiela (see: the most recent spring collection), but with this batch — each one an inspired, unexpected creation — she truly outdid herself. John Galliano's entire collection was artful, incorporating a multitude of different fabrics, textures and finishes — as well as cutouts, layered pieces and embroidered tulle. In keeping with the artisanal theme, McGrath went modern and abstract, tailoring each model's makeup to the specific pieces she wore.
For some models, McGrath incorporated multimedia elements in addition to makeup; you can see bunched-up red yarn adorning Barbora Podzimková's lips below.
Model Teddy Quinlivan's hair and makeup were among the most subtle-yet-elaborate looks on the runway; both beauty elements incorporated colorful threads and stitching to mimic the design of her coat.
Here's a close-up view from McGrath, in which you can see how the yellow thread appears to be stitched along her eyelid and around her ear. Hairstylist Eugene Souleiman also incorporated colorful thread into Quinlivan's braids.
