I'm a big — huge! — fan of backpacks, and have been for as long as memory serves. When I was younger, my fondness for them meant I even went so far as to carry an enormous one around while I hiked, slept in tents and drank water that was purified with iodine tablets. I carry a bright-orange one (courtesy of Marc Jacobs) when I travel, but I've been on the hunt for one that's more moderately sized for workweek use — or at the very least, just large enough to fit my wallet, keys, water bottle and packed lunch.
And does this Madewell pack fit the bill! It's appropriately sized — which is to say, not enormous — but may even just be a little roomier than the picture lets on. Plus, the supple black leather and slender shoulder straps make this an appropriate bag to wear to fancy fashion appointments or a more upscale happy hour. But better yet, it affords all the same benefits as any ol' backpack: allowing the hands-free convenience we all know and love. (Just be careful with it on crowded subways?)
