Beauty tutorials are big on YouTube — a search for "makeup tutorial" and "hair tutorial" yields more than five million videos. In this weekly series, we put a mix of popular and under-the-radar tutorials to the test and show you what's best.

"Every week, I do a routine like this one, just basic stuff," says beauty blogger and excellent-curly-hair-haver Alba Ramos at the beginning of her de-tangling YouTube tutorial. In the video, she talks through each step in her curly hair-care regimen, from cleansing to towel-drying. She starts with a moisturizing shampoo or co-wash, focusing on the roots and avoiding the ends; if she's washing once a week, she'll go for the shampoo; but if it's the second time in a week, that's when she reaches for the co-wash.

Other important tools to arm yourself with if you're going to attempt this one at home: a wide-tooth comb, a microfiber towel or T-shirt for drying without frizz and a hair catcher for your drain because duh.
