Longtime Chanel brand ambassador Kristen Stewart has done just about everything for her many house ad campaigns over the years, from rocking a mean smoky eye to — mamma mia! — channeling her inner Italian bombshell. But for the iconic French brand's long-awaited campaign for its newest handbag style, the Gabrielle, the "Personal Shopper" actress finds herself in an entirely new role: that of Miss Gabrielle Chanel, herself.
In a new short film lensed by Australian director Daniel Askill, a pre-platinum buzz cut Stewart stars as a leaping, brooding version of Coco Chanel, at once overcome with intense emotion and electrified by raw energy. "What we landed on [in the film] was ultimately the search for Gabrielle's spirit, and the sort of fight that you can have with the idea of someone disappearing," said Stewart via brand statement shared with Fashionista.
Other films in the series — which will be unveiled week-by-week during the month of April — will star fellow brand faces Cara Delevingne, Caroline de Maigret and Pharrell Williams, the latter of whom, in case you missed it, is the first man to front a Chanel handbag campaign.
