In 2004, my 14-year-old self was heavily into jean skirts. It was the Ugg's heyday, a time when it seemed perfectly logical to pair sheepskin winter boots with a Juicy-Couture- or Bebe-logo-emblazoned T-shirt, bare legs and an Abercrombie micro-mini. So given these very specific associations with denim skirts, I've mostly stayed away from them in the years since. But this summer, I plan to dip a toe back into the jirt (if jean shorts are "jorts," it stands to reason that jean skirts are "jirts," right?) pool in the form of this piece from Madewell.
Madewell's McCarren raw-hem jean skirt is a vast improvement from my early-aughts mini jirt of yore (which, I'm pretty sure, didn't pass my school's "finger-length" test, given that it featured a 1.5-inch zipper). The mid-rise, slightly more modest length and medium wash make it feel current for 2017.
I haven't scooped this skirt up just yet, since I'm still figuring out my spring/summer shopping game plan, but it's at the top of my shopping list (along with all of these). I'll probably style it with sneakers and a T-shirt — albeit probably not a Juicy Couture or Bebe one — pretty much exactly like how it's shown on Madewell's website. Don't worry, I promise to skip the Ugg boots this time around.
Madewell McCarren raw-hem jean skirt, $79.50, available at Madewell.
