On Monday evening, fashion's finest congregated in New York City for the 2017 Met Gala. This year's theme (or lack thereof) seemed to leave many attendees confused and stumped; after all, not everyone can simply throw on their favorite Comme des Garçons look and call it a day. But it also opened up the door for a range of unexpected hair and makeup looks, pushing fashion folk, celebrities and their glam squads to flex their creative muscles.
For many of those on the red carpet, that meant trying some variation on Rei Kawakubo hair in the form of a blunt bob. And then there were others who went a step further in the avant-garde direction, be it via a metallic-painted-and-bejeweled head (Cara Delevingne), a subtle white stripe of makeup traced from the earlobe to the chin (Solange) or an updo so sculptural it belongs in the Whitney (Céline Dion).
There were a smattering of subtler — yet still memorable — hair and makeup looks to be found, too. Zoë Kravitz's flawless cat-eye flick and new platinum pixie served as the perfect foil to her voluminous gown, while Bella Hadid was just all-around sexy as hell (and also showed off a new haircut).
