Or the "French-kissed" look, as makeup artist Violette calls it.

Beauty tutorials are big on YouTube — a search for "makeup tutorial" and "hair tutorial" yields more than five million videos. In this weekly series, we put a mix of popular and under-the-radar tutorials to the test and show you what's best.

Classic red lipstick has been A Thing for so long because it's impactful and versatile all at once. But one way to update it to make it feel especially of the moment for 2017 is to experiment with blurred-out, hazy edges. Where a crisp, sharp lip line may have been the way to go in years past, there's something modern and sexy about a blended take on the look, like the version outlined in French makeup artist Violette's tutorial.

"In my country, we love to wear classic red lipstick — but I'm going to show you how to blur the edges of the lips to make it a little bit more romantic," says Violette, who calls the effect a "French-kissed" look. She relies on Glossier Balm Dotcom in Cherry and Lime Crime Matte Velvetine Lipstick in Red Velvet, and then taps a fluffy brush over the color to diffuse and "blur the contour of the lip."
