Beauty tutorials are big on YouTube — a search for "makeup tutorial" and "hair tutorial" yields more than five million videos. In this weekly series, we put a mix of popular and under-the-radar tutorials to the test and show you what's best.

Not everyone is going to be gung ho about adding a seemingly "extra" step to their nightly skin-care routine. That's understandable. But if you've been struggling with breakouts or tend to wear a lot of makeup, pre-cleansing is a super useful way to go. By first applying an oil or balm to dry skin, massaging it into skin and then emulsifying it with some water before rinsing it off, this process melts away stubborn makeup and sunscreen that can linger on skin and wind up clogging your pores. Blogger Ingrid Nilsen swears by this technique — which is also often referred to as "double cleansing" — to make sure she's removing every last bit of makeup, which in turn keeps breakouts at bay.

In a recent video, Nilsen outlines her exact nighttime routine, including the pre-cleanse step and talks through the benefits of adopting this habit. Nilsen also offers up some solid skin product suggestions (and even a few super-inexpensive drugstore options), so if you're breakout-prone, this tutorial is definitely worth a watch.
