For some reason, even though I've met them and can attest to them being very sweet, normal people, the first visual I get when I think of Rodarte designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy is them sitting in a dark room watching horror movies for hours on end. They've mentioned in several interviews that they do this, and now it appears that was all research — and not only for their subversively romantic clothing collections.
As we reported back in 2015, the Los Angeles-based sisters have pulled a Tom Ford and written and directed their first Hollywood film, and now the first trailer for "Woodshock" is here. As you might have expected, it looks dark and weird and jarring and artistic and visually stunning.
Here is the official synopsis, per its studio A24:
The exquisite feature film debut of visionary fashion designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy (Rodarte), Woodshock is a hypnotic exploration of isolation, paranoia, and grief that exists in a dream-world all its own. Kirsten Dunst stars as Theresa, a haunted young woman spiraling in the wake of profound loss, torn between her fractured emotional state and the reality-altering effects of a potent cannabinoid drug. Immersive, spellbinding, and sublime, Woodshock transcends genre to become a singularly thrilling cinematic experience that marks the arrival of the Mulleavy siblings as a major new voice in film.
We especially like the phrase "exists in a dream-world all its own," since that would seem to perfectly describe the Mulleavys' clothing as well. The trailer truly sucks you in, as does Dunst, who appears to be channeling an even more fucked up version of her character in "Melancholia." In other words, we can't wait to see this.
"Woodshock" is slated for a Sept. 15 release. Between this and Sofia Coppola's "The Beguiled," Dunst has quite a busy — and Rodarte-filled — promotional appearance schedule ahead of her. In the meantime, you can watch the trailer below.
