One year ago, on the first Monday in May of 2016, former One Direction heartthrob Zayn Malik arrived on the Met Gala red carpet hand-in-hand with Gigi Hadid, the supermodel he'd been quietly dating for several months, marking their "official" public debut as a couple. A few months prior at the Grammy Awards, The Weeknd (aka Abel Tesfaye) showed up with Bella Hadid, marking their first time together at a fancy party. So, this sort of "coming out" is firmly a young Hollywood trend, and on Monday at the 2017 Met Gala, Mr. Tesfaye broke the collective hearts of Hadid stans everywhere when he stepped out to the Vogue-sponsored event with his new love interest, Selena Gomez.

We know, we know: We are adult humans and should not get emotionally involved in celebrity relationships that we have little to no knowledge about, but this one hurts. Sure, Gomez looks cute in a Coach by Stuart Vevers evening look — a first for the American Heritage brand — but we can't help but think of this very night last year, when The Weeknd was fawning over Hadid in a stunning black Givenchy gown by Riccardo Tisci. But we have a feeling Hadid isn't too concerned about running into her ex: She's slated to arrive with Alexander Wang, who's proven time and time again that he's the life of every party. You know what they say: Living well (and looking incredible while wearing Wang) is the best revenge.
