Balenciaga's Spring 2018 Menswear Collection Was All About Dads — and Debuted Childrenswear

It was literally inspired by "young dads in the park with their kids on the weekend."

Fashion's daddy issues continue as Demna Gvasalia looked to fatherhood for Balenciaga's Spring 2018 men's collection at the start of men's fashion week in Paris. The designer brought showgoers — including one ageless Kyle MacLachlan — to the public park Bois du Boulogne on a hot Wednesday afternoon to debut a range that was quite literally inspired by "young dads in the park with their kids on the weekend," according to the runway show's notes. "These are those same men, out of the office, relaxed and often observed at their happiest."

The clothes were an extension of Gvasalia's take on corporate culture from last season, which incorporated Bernie Sanders's campaign graphics and Balenciaga's parent company Kering's logo. Models showcased outdoor-friendly looks, like printed button-downs, oversize polos, slouchy blazers achieved by actual weights in its sleeves and lining, "Europa!"-emblazoned ponchos, hiking-style jackets (gorpcore!) and three-tiered trousers, as if Dad wanted to get a little creative with his jeans.

Of course, a Balenciaga collection would not be complete without an overpriced accessory inspired by an everyday item. This time, Gvasalia created a flat leather bag as an "enhanced version of the kind found at every supermarket in the world."

The show also included few kids in the mix, as the male models toted children of all ages, from toddlers to Cool Teens™, along the runway, dressed in hoodies, sweatpants and the brand's popular "Speed" trainers in different colorways. Could this be the French fashion house's debut foray into childrenswear? We wouldn't be too surprised: High-end and contemporary brands like Balmain, Givenchy, Yeezy and Reformation have been steadily adding kid's clothing to their lines.

In the spirit of "see now, buy now," the newly revealed collection will be available for pre-order on Balenciaga's website for only one week starting Thurs., June 22. (Here's hoping the childrenswear will also be available for pre-sale, so I can finally get a pair of "Speed" trainers.) Until then, you can see Balenciaga's entire Spring 2018 men's collection in the gallery below. We'll be waiting on Kanye West and Northie's daddy-daughter fashion moment in one of these looks anytime now.
