As someone who generally goes straight past "tan" to "lobster" while spending time outdoors, I've learned that I have to be extremely diligent about sunscreen. For me, that means, 1) applying a whole layer and letting it set before I ever leave my house, 2) reapplying very often, and 3) committing to a reliable formula with an SPF over 50. For me, my new holy grail is Neutrogena's Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen in SPF 100. I realize this may sound insane, but I brought a bottle with me to go hiking through farms and fields in Spain with my dad in a 90-degree heat wave and didn't even come back with so much as a weird farmer's tan. It worked so well that he asked me to leave my bottle with him, because the one he'd packed was leaving him a little pink. (Which I obviously did, because I am a good daughter, and I care about the skin health of my loved ones!)
This past weekend, I had my first beach day of the summer, and instead of buying a new bottle, I just slapped on the remains of a different brand that had been sitting underneath my sink since last summer. Big mistake. Huge! I am now (you guessed it!) super-burnt, as is my boyfriend. I am now planning a post-work trip to Duane Reade — not just to pick up some much-needed aloe, but also to grab several bottles of Neutrogena's sunscreen so I can spend the rest of the summer sunburn-free.
Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen, $12.99, available at Ulta
