If ever there was proof that sustainable fashion is moving away from being a niche concern and into the mainstream, the first annual Green Carpet Fashion Awards, held on Sunday night in Italy, were it. The star-studded event drew A-list models like Naomi Campbell and Gisele Bündchen, designers like Alessandro Michele and Giorgio Armani, actors like Dakota Johnson and Zoe Saldana and editors like Suzy Menkes and Anna Wintour to its "green carpet," where attendees wore sustainable designs from a range of labels.
The event was presented by Italian fashion governing body Camera Nazionale della Moda in collaboration with sustainability consultancy Eco-Age, with the support of the Ministry of Economic Development, the Italian Trade Agency and the patronage of the Municipality of Milan. Its goal, according to a release, was to "put sustainability — arguably the most important movement for humankind — at the heart of fashion," with an emphasis on the Italian luxury industry and its supply chains. Awardees included both well-recognized labels like Brunello Cucinelli and up-and-coming brands like Tiziano Guardini that are foregrounding sustainable production.
