Welcome to our column, "Hey, Quick Question," where we investigate seemingly random happenings in the fashion and beauty industries. Enjoy!
The Daily Front Row released the cover of its Media Issue on Tuesday to celebrate its fifth annual Fashion Media Awards, which will take place on Sept. 8, co-starring Kendall Jenner and Mario Testino. The two "Forces of Fashion" will be honored separately during the special event: Testino for "Creative Director of the Year," and 21-year-old Jenner for "Fashion Icon of the Decade."
If we do the math, The Daily Front Row cover star's iconic career started when she was just 11 years old. A little ol' pre-teen. Sure, the celebrity model has been in the spotlight for what feels like forever, but to be recognized for her role in fashion for the past 10 years is a bit of stretch. Meanwhile, Testino is getting recognized for just one sliver of his entire career.
In an official statement provided to the Huffington Post, the publication further explained its new award and why it will be given to Jenner:
We're living in a digital decade and Kendall is the ultimate style influencer. [The] digital generation more than ever turns to social media to learn what's next and Kendall has 83 million devoted Instagram followers, many of whom emulate her style. Kendall has also captured the hearts of the leading fashion magazines, photographers, and brands. A fashion icon is someone who influences the look of a generation and Kendall has been making a huge impact on their style. It's noteworthy that fashion bible Vogue has called her the breakout model of her generation and put her on the cover of their September issue in 2016.
"Breakout model," sure, yes, that's applicable. Jenner's Instagirl wardrobe has certainly struck a chord lately after nabbing stylist Marni Senofonte earlier this spring. But over the past 10 years, how many of her looks, while influential, have been particularly memorable?
Here at Fashionista, we have plenty of other suggestions for who is more deserving of the "Fashion Icon of the Decade" title. The internet has been suggesting Rihanna as an alternative, and we strongly agree. Also, Lady Gaga, Michelle Obama and literally anyone else who's over the age of 21.
Perhaps The Daily's decision boiled down to who will be able to make an appearance to receive the "Fashion Icon" award in person from presenter (and longtime Jenner fan) Katie Grand on Sept. 8. And with the likelihood of Jenner being booked for a few runway shows during New York Fashion Week, the timing may have worked out perfectly.
